After a turbulent two years at Old Trafford marked by costly errors and unwavering locker room support, the goalkeeper seeks a fresh start on loan at Trabzonspor.
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has agreed to join Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan. The departure comes after a tenure defined by glimpses of brilliance overshadowed by high-profile mistakes, yet throughout it all, the Cameroonian retained the fierce loyalty of his teammates.
The 29-year-old, signed for £43.8 million from Inter Milan two years ago, never consistently replicated the form that made him a Champions League finalist. His time at United was punctuated by costly errors, from a calamitous performance in a Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town to mistakes in crucial Europa League fixtures against clubs like Viktoria Plzen and Lyon.
Despite the external criticism and scrutiny, the United dressing room consistently rallied behind him. Captain Bruno Fernandes, defender Diogo Dalot, and others frequently offered public support, emphasizing their belief in his quality and character.
“We have huge belief in Andre,” Fernandes stated after one error. “He knows he made a mistake, he’s a clever guy… We trust his qualities.” Defender Harry Maguire also noted, “Andre has proven in his past that he is an excellent goalkeeper… During a career, you always have spells where you have ups and downs.”
The loan move was facilitated by United’s deadline-day signing of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens and the later closing of the Turkish transfer window. There is no option to buy included in the deal, leaving Onana’s long-term future at United uncertain.
He leaves for Turkey knowing that while he struggled to win over the critics, he never lost the respect of the men standing beside him on the pitch.
