The Nigerian artist reveals he secretly hoped the track would be rejected; he has now released it on his own new album.
n a heartfelt revelation, celebrated Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has shared that he once penned a song for global icon Beyoncé during one of the most challenging chapters of his life—a period of profound personal grief.
The opportunity came in 2019, shortly after the devastating loss of his father, when Beyoncé’s team invited him to contribute to her acclaimed ‘The Lion King: The Gift’ album. While the offer was a monumental career moment, Gold was grappling with a pain that made creating music feel impossible.
“At the time, I was too consumed by grief to even think about music,” Gold confessed. “But one day I forced myself back into the studio. Out of that pain, I wrote ‘Simile’.”
Despite sending the emotionally charged track to Beyoncé’s camp, the artist admitted he secretly hoped it wouldn’t be chosen. The song, too personal and raw, was shelved and remained unheard for years—a hidden artifact of his sorrow.
That was until a recent studio session in 2024, when a longtime collaborator replayed the forgotten demo. Hearing it again brought a new perspective. “It reminded me that even in my deepest loss, I was not alone. I had God to lean on,” he reflected.
Now, Adekunle Gold has given “Simile” a new life and purpose, including it on his latest album, ‘Fuji’. He hopes the track, born from his own experience with loss, will serve as a balm for listeners navigating their own hardships.
“Grief isn’t just about losing a parent,” he said. “It can be the loss of a person, a friendship, a dream, or even a version of yourself; whatever it is, you don’t have to carry it alone.” The song’s journey from a private offering to a public comfort marks a full-circle moment of healing and shared humanity.
