Nigerian Forward Makes History After Stellar Performances for Club and Country
Ademola Lookman has been named the 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year, cementing his place as one of the continent’s brightest stars. The Atalanta forward outshone Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain) and Cote d’Ivoire’s Simon Adingra (Brighton) to claim the prestigious honor. Other nominees included Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy (Guinea) and South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
An Exceptional Year
Lookman, 27, enjoyed a remarkable year on both the international and club stages. He played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey to the final of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, contributing three goals and an assist across seven games. His performances were instrumental in the Super Eagles’ unbeaten run leading to the final, where they were narrowly defeated by Cote d’Ivoire.
At the club level, Lookman made history with Atalanta by leading the Italian side to their first-ever Europa League title. In a sensational display during the final against Bayer Leverkusen, Lookman scored a hat-trick — becoming the first African player to net three goals in a European final.
A Stellar Serie A Campaign
Lookman’s form has continued into the 2024/25 season, where he has been a key figure in Atalanta’s unexpected rise to the top of Serie A. His consistent contributions in goals and assists have been pivotal in the team’s domestic success.
Lookman’s achievement sees him join an elite list of Nigerian players who have won the African Footballer of the Year award, including legends like Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, Victor Ikpeba, Nwankwo Kanu, and Victor Osimhen.
