Music legend reveals mixed feelings about his iconic song’s complicated legacy of fame and controversy.
In a candid revelation, iconic Nigerian musician Innocent “2Face” Idibia has shared that his generation-defining hit, ‘African Queen,’ has been both a gift and a burden throughout his career.
The artist made the heartfelt admission during a recent television appearance, describing the complex legacy of the 2004 song that catapulted him to global fame. “African Queen has been a very huge blessing, and e come turn to problem join for me,” 2Face stated, blending English and Pidgin for emphasis. “But I am grateful for everything.”
The track was a monumental success, breaking continental barriers and making 2Face the first African artist to win major international awards including a BET, an MTV Europe, and a MOBO award. It became an unofficial anthem for a continent, celebrated for its soulful melody and heartfelt lyrics.
However, the song’s legacy has been persistently shadowed by claims from his former bandmate, Blackface, who has long alleged that 2Face stole the song from him. While 2Face has previously acknowledged that the song originated from a collaborative effort with his former bandmates in the group Plantashun Boiz, he has consistently denied stealing it.
Despite the passage of over twenty years, the dispute remains a sensitive topic, recently reignited when Billboard magazine named ‘African Queen’ the “greatest Afrobeats song of all time” this past August. For 2Face, the classic song remains a profound part of his story—a source of immense pride and a recurring challenge.
