Former Senator counters sexual harassment, corruption allegations with strong endorsement as political storm intensifies
Former Bayelsa East Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has launched a spirited defense of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, calling him “a man of unimpeachable good character” amid explosive allegations of sexual misconduct and corruption from political rivals. The public show of support comes as Akpabio faces one of his most damaging controversies since assuming leadership of the National Assembly.

Allegations and Counterclaims
The Senate President stands accused by Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of orchestrating her suspension after she rejected his alleged sexual advances. The claims gained traction when former Vice President Atiku Abubakar doubled down, labeling Akpabio “a corrupt leader with a knack for abusing women.”
But Murray-Bruce, posting passionately on X (formerly Twitter), presented a radically different portrait: “Here we have a man investigated in and out by independent agencies and foes alike, yet he’s come out clean as a whistle.” The former lawmaker emphasized Nigeria’s need for stability, warning against “trifling with institutions like the Legislature over partisan considerations.”
A Political Firestorm
The controversy has exposed deep fractures in Nigeria’s political class. While Murray-Bruce frames his support as patriotic duty (“I will not stand idly by…”), critics view it as partisan loyalty overshadowing serious allegations. His assertion that “Nigeria is fortunate” to have Akpabio leading the Senate directly contradicts growing calls for accountability.
As the scandal threatens to overshadow legislative business, Murray-Bruce’s intervention raises pointed questions: Can character endorsements outweigh misconduct claims? And in Nigeria’s tense political climate, where does statesmanship end and blind allegiance begin? For now, the Senate President retains at least one powerful defender – but the court of public opinion remains in session.
