Alexander Isak Frustrated at Newcastle as Liverpool’s £120m Dream Move Collapses

Magpies Stand Firm on Star Striker Amid Stalled Contract Talks

Newcastle United’s star striker Alexander Isak is reportedly growing frustrated at St James’ Park after the club blocked a potential British record £120 million move to Liverpool—while contract renewal talks have stalled.

The Swedish international, who has blossomed into one of the Premier League’s most lethal forwards since his £63 million arrival from Real Sociedad in 2023, was the subject of a bold approach from Liverpool. The Reds, fresh off their £116 million capture of Florian Wirtz, saw their ambitious bid swiftly rejected by Newcastle’s hierarchy, who remain adamant about keeping their prized asset under Eddie Howe’s reign.

Isak, 25, has delivered back-to-back 20+ goal seasons and was instrumental in Newcastle’s League Cup triumph over Liverpool in 2023. Despite his importance to the Magpies, sources claim he is “unhappy” with the lack of progress over a new contract. His current £130,000-a-week deal runs until 2027, but Newcastle had previously promised improved terms—potentially pushing his wages beyond £200,000 to make him the club’s highest earner.

Liverpool, undeterred by the rejection, have already pivoted to alternative targets, winning the race for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike in a £75 million deal. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s own transfer plans have hit turbulence after missing out on Ekitike and facing competition from Manchester United for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.

With Anthony Elanga as their only major summer signing so far, pressure is mounting on Howe to reinforce his squad. The Newcastle boss recently stressed the need for urgency in the market, stating: “We have to be dynamic. Good players don’t hang around for long.”

For now, Isak remains a Magpie—but whether his long-term future lies on Tyneside could depend on how quickly Newcastle resolve his contract standoff and prove their ambition in the transfer window.
