Federation Questions “Credibility of the African Referee” in 2-0 Defeat, Calls for Investigation
The Algerian Football Federation has submitted a formal complaint to both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over refereeing decisions during their 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals last Saturday, describing the officiating as damaging to the credibility of African football.
In a detailed statement posted on social media, the federation congratulated their team, the Fennecs, for their tournament performance but expressed “widespread outrage” at the match officiating, which they believe “does not serve the image of African football internationally.”
“We cannot ignore the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and left widespread outrage,” the statement read. “The Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation.”
The move follows an earlier announcement from CAF that it had opened an investigation into “potentially unacceptable behaviour” after a clash between players at the final whistle. Algeria’s complaint adds a formal layer of protest to an already tense exit.
Nigeria won the match in Marrakech with goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, advancing to a semifinal against hosts Morocco on Wednesday. Any resulting disciplinary action from CAF could potentially impact the Super Eagles as they prepare for that crucial clash.
Despite the protest, the Algerian federation called for national unity and support as the team looks ahead to World Cup qualifying later this year. “The Algerian Football Federation will continue its efforts… so that the national team remains among the best teams, and a source of pride, joy and esteem for the Algerian youth,” the statement concluded.
