The new manager has identified the Chelsea midfielder as his dream signing, yet a complex financial puzzle involving potential superstar sales makes a deal far from certain.
New Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly urging the club’s president to make a major splash in 2026, targeting Chelsea’s Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez as his top priority.
According to widespread reports from Spain, Alonso, who took the helm at the Bernabeu in May, was keen to strengthen his midfield this summer, especially after the departure of legendary figure Luka Modric. When that search proved fruitless, his focus reportedly shifted to a long-term target: Enzo Fernandez.
Spanish outlet Fichajes claims Alonso is now “pressuring” president Florentino Perez to secure the 24-year-old next year, believing he is the “ideal candidate” to revitalize the heart of the team.
However, Real Madrid faces a significant challenge in prising the World Cup winner away from London. Fernandez appears settled at Chelsea after a season of exit rumors, and his contract binds him to the club until 2032. More daunting is the reported price tag; any deal would likely require a fee in the region of €138 million, a sum that currently stretches beyond the club’s financial reach.
This financial reality makes a transfer increasingly unlikely unless Fernandez himself actively agitates for a move.
Complicating matters further are Real Madrid’s other grand ambitions. The club is also linked with a sensational move for Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland. This pursuit is seen as a potential replacement for Vinicius Junior, who continues to be the subject of intense speculation linking him with a world-record transfer to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli in 2026.
If the sale of Vinicius were to materialize, it could free up the necessary funds for a run at Haaland, though the Norwegian also recently signed a long-term contract with City, extending until 2034.
Beyond these marquee names, Real Madrid’s scouts remain busy, with recent links to a host of other talents including Crystal Palace’s English duo Adam Wharton and Marc Guehi, as well as Desire Doue and Ibrahima Konate.
