Senior Football Figure Proposes Multi-Season Points Deduction Over Relegation
As Manchester City prepares to face a hearing over 115 alleged financial rule breaches, a senior figure in football has proposed an alternative punishment if the club is found guilty. The hearing, set to begin on Monday, will address charges brought by the Premier League in February 2023, which City vehemently deny, claiming to have “irrefutable evidence” of their innocence.
Potential sanctions for the club, if found guilty of serious breaches, could include points deductions or fines. According to the London Evening Standard, while relegation from the Premier League remains a possibility, it is considered unlikely. Reports from The Times in August indicated that the charges could actually total 130 due to a reporting error by the Premier League.
In a new twist, The Telegraph reports that the hearing commission may not have the authority to directly relegate Manchester City to a specific division. If found guilty, the club would need to apply for admission to the English Football League (EFL), but the EFL would not be obliged to accept them.
A senior figure has now suggested that relegation may not be a severe enough penalty for City if they are found guilty of the most serious infractions. Instead, a multi-season points deduction has been proposed, which could cripple the club’s ability to compete for honors over multiple campaigns, rather than a one-time relegation.
The hearing marks a significant moment in the ongoing investigation, and any outcome will have major implications for both Manchester City and the wider football community.
