Manager Ruben Amorim Praises Team’s Resilience After Viktoria Plzen Triumph
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim hailed his team’s resilience and highlighted the contributions of Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund in their hard-fought 2-1 comeback win over Viktoria Plzen in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
After a scoreless first half in Czechia, the home side took the lead early in the second half when a misstep from United goalkeeper Andre Onana allowed Matej Vydra to find the back of the net. However, United rallied, with Hojlund, part of a triple substitution alongside Antony and Mason Mount, stepping up to score twice and secure the crucial victory.
The win lifts United into fifth place in the group, positioning them within reach of automatic qualification for the next round.
Amorim Reflects on Team’s Performance
Speaking to TNT Sports post-match, Amorim expressed satisfaction with the second-half turnaround but acknowledged room for improvement.
“I think we improved throughout the game,” he said. “We controlled the first half but lacked speed and movement. The pitch made it difficult to connect with our strikers, but Viktoria didn’t have many chances either.”
Amorim credited his players’ adjustments after conceding the opening goal:
“We reacted well. We pushed the opponent into their half and managed to score. The players off the bench helped change the game’s speed, and we improved overall.”
Praise for Hojlund and Diallo
The manager commended Rasmus Hojlund for his growing adaptation to the team’s tactical demands. “He’s improving and getting closer to understanding the movements required. He could have scored more tonight, but he’s scoring, working hard, and controlling the ball better,” Amorim said.
Amad Diallo also earned plaudits for his versatility and promise. Operating in a No. 10 role, the Ivorian showcased his creativity and left-footed finesse.
“I think he can be very effective in that position,” Amorim noted. “He was dropping too deep in the first half, but he’ll improve with time. He needs to stay closer to the goal and the backline.”
Building Toward the Future
Amorim highlighted the team’s work on possession and transitions, emphasizing the importance of spending more time near opponents’ goals.
“This team needs to play less in transition and more in sustained attacks. We’re working on that, and winning tonight is a good step in preparing for the next game,” he concluded.
United fans will hope this victory marks a turning point in the campaign as the team continues to adapt under Amorim’s leadership.
