Streaming platform clears the air after an incident during Liverpool’s dramatic 3-3 draw against Newcastle United.
Amazon Prime has reportedly apologised to Liverpool manager Arne Slot following an on-air claim that he visited the referee’s room at halftime during Wednesday’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
In a game packed with drama, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon twice put the hosts ahead, only for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to lead a remarkable comeback. A late mistake by Reds goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher allowed Fabian Schar to snatch an equaliser for the Magpies in the dying moments.
After the match, Amazon Prime presenter Dan Walker relayed a claim that Slot had entered the officials’ room during the halftime break. This sparked discussions, especially given the controversy surrounding referee Andrew Madley’s decision to end the match during a Newcastle counter-attack.
When asked about the incident, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe avoided criticism, saying, “I don’t think I’ll go there. I think that’s a can of worms. I tend to focus on my team.”
However, reports from The Times revealed that Amazon Prime later apologised to Slot, clarifying that the Liverpool manager had only spoken to the referee in the tunnel, not in the officials’ room. The streaming platform attributed the mistake to a production error and personally reached out to Slot to express regret for the misunderstanding.
Reflecting on the match, Slot said:
“In the first half, there were moments where you thought a draw would be a good result. But in the second half, especially after we scored for 1-1, I thought we were really impressive. We created so many opportunities. Being 3-2 up with a minute to go, it feels like a disappointment to drop two points.”
The draw has tightened the Premier League title race, with Liverpool’s lead at the top now reduced to seven points. The Reds will return to action this Saturday in a Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park.
