Manager Reflects on the Need for Improvement Despite Convincing Victory
Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim has admitted that there is still much work to be done at Old Trafford, despite guiding the team to an impressive 4-0 victory over Everton on Sunday. This win marked his first Premier League success since taking charge of the Red Devils.
Amorim watched on as Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee each scored twice to help United dismantle Sean Dyche’s Toffees. The victory lifted United to ninth in the Premier League standings, and it came on the back of a 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town and a 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Europa League, marking a solid start for the Portuguese manager.
However, despite the comfortable scoreline, Amorim was quick to temper expectations, emphasizing that the team’s performance was far from flawless. “It was far from a perfect performance,” he told BBC Sport. “I felt the players could solve some problems that we have as a team because of the quality they possess, but it was far from perfect. Still, a really good result and a tough match.”
Morale has been a key focus at United following the tumultuous end to Erik ten Hag’s tenure. When asked about the mood in the dressing room, Amorim acknowledged that a fresh approach had brought a sense of positivity. “It helps to have a new face, it always helps,” he said. “We have to be clear to our fans, and this will always help. But we need to improve, you can feel that in the game. After 15 minutes, Everton controlled the game, and we were losing the second ball. It was tough for us.”
Amorim was quick to manage expectations, stating that while results like the win over Everton are crucial, there is still much to address. “Rather than trying to convince the fans about this performance, we have a lot to do, it will take time,” he added. “Sometimes we are not playing well but defended everyone together. Our fans just ask for hard work, and then in time, they will ask for better football.”
Looking ahead, United faces a challenging week with matches against Arsenal on Wednesday and Nottingham Forest next weekend in the Premier League. Amorim will also take his side to Plzen for a UEFA Europa League encounter before experiencing his first Manchester derby at the Etihad, where he hopes to replicate the success he enjoyed with Sporting CP, who defeated Manchester City 4-1 in a memorable Champions League clash.
