Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim delivered a scathing assessment of his team’s performance, stating they “deserved to lose” their 1-0 clash with Everton at Old Trafford. The defeat, which ended a five-game unbeaten run, was particularly galling as United played over 75 minutes with a man advantage.
The match turned early when Everton’s Idrissa Gueye was bizarrely sent off for striking his own teammate.
Instead of capitalizing, United appeared flat, allowing a resilient Everton to take the lead through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s first-half strike and then comfortably hold on for a famous victory.
In a frank post-match press conference, Amorim did not hold back. “Frustration, disappointment about the way we played the game,” he said. “They were the better team… I think we deserved to lose. We didn’t play well, we didn’t play with the right intensity.”
Amorim admitted his team failed to seize a golden opportunity, especially after Everton went down to ten men. “We need to be ready,” he stated. “Twenty minutes in the game, red card for opponent, we need to win that, no matter what.”
Taking responsibility, the manager expressed his deepest concern is a return to the struggles of last season. “I feel afraid of returning this feeling of last season,” Amorim revealed. “That is my biggest concern. We need to work together and we need to be better.”
He concluded with a sobering reality check for his squad, adding, “We are not there, not even near the point we should be to fight for the best positions in the league.”
United will now look to regroup as they travel to face Crystal Palace this weekend, with Amorim demanding a significant and immediate response from his players.
