Amorim Jokes Captain Fernandes Is Gunning for His Job as Injury Sidelines United Star

Injured Skipper Remains a Vocal Presence Behind the Scenes as United Prepare for Crucial Wolves Clash

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has light-heartedly suggested that club captain Bruno Fernandes might have designs on his job, as the injured midfielder continues to play an influential role from the sidelines.

Fernandes has been sidelined since picking up a hamstring injury in the defeat to Aston Villa just before Christmas. Yet, even while recovering, the Portuguese playmaker has remained a constant, vocal presence at Carrington—observing training sessions, analyzing matches, and supporting his teammates.

“He cannot be the guy that, when he’s not playing, he’s not talking,” Amorim said with a smile ahead of United’s match against Wolves. “That’s why he’s the captain. He leaves the game behind and is there watching the other guys train, even after his treatment. I don’t know if he wants my job, but he’s a leader. The guy’s a leader.”

Fernandes was spotted pitchside before United’s recent win over Newcastle and is regularly seen alongside Amorim during training—absorbing insights and maintaining his connection to the squad.

Despite losing just one of their last seven matches, United’s injury troubles persist. Fernandes remains unavailable for the visit of Wolves, though his behind-the-scenes influence is clearly valued by the coaching staff.

Amorim stressed there can be no excuses against a Wolves side still searching for their first win this season and rooted to the bottom of the table.

“Of course we need the three points,” he said. “They showed against Arsenal they could have taken at least a point. In the Premier League, you never know—they have their problems, we have ours. But in this game, there are no excuses. We need to win.”

As United look to maintain momentum, Fernandes’ leadership off the pitch seems to be leaving as much of an impression as his performances on it.
