Manchester United have secured Ruben Amorim as their next manager in an agreement with Sporting CP that includes the Portuguese coach’s key staff, with final details of the transition now emerging. Amorim is expected to assume his role after the November international break, following the interim leadership of former United star Ruud van Nistelrooy, who stepped in after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday.
According to The Telegraph and the Daily Mail, United will officially introduce Amorim to Old Trafford following their match against Leicester on November 10. This timeline allows Van Nistelrooy to lead United through the team’s next three fixtures: Chelsea on November 3, PAOK in the Europa League on November 7, and Leicester on November 10. Amorim’s debut as manager is anticipated for the November 24 Premier League match against Ipswich Town.
The terms of Amorim’s release from Sporting involve United covering a €12 million fee—€2 million above his original release clause. This amount compensates Sporting for the departure of Amorim’s coaching staff, which includes assistants Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro, goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital, and fitness coach Paulo Barreira. The extra fee also bypasses Amorim’s 30-day notice period, granting Sporting time to reorganize their coaching roster as the departure takes effect.
Amorim’s contract with United spans two-and-a-half years, through to the end of the 2026/27 season, with an option to extend an additional year. The 39-year-old coach’s salary at United will rise to £6.5 million annually—more than triple his previous pay at Sporting of £2.15 million per year.
Reflecting on his interim tenure after United’s recent 5-2 League Cup win over Leicester, Van Nistelrooy expressed his commitment to remaining involved at the club, stating, “In the future, in any capacity, I’m here to help the club and build towards its future.” However, with Amorim expected to bring his own coaching team, reports speculate that Van Nistelrooy may step down from his interim position when Amorim and his staff arrive.
