Under-pressure manager shoulders responsibility for City defeat but insists he will not change his methods, telling club owners: “If they want it changed, you change the man.”
In the wake of a humbling 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, a defiant yet apologetic Ruben Amorim shouldered the entire burden for his team’s performance, stating bluntly, “It’s my fault, not their fault.”
The loss at the Etihad Stadium, sealed by a Phil Foden opener and a brace from Erling Haaland, highlighted the gulf between the two rivals. For a United side now suffering its worst start to a league campaign in over 30 years, the result was a stark reality check.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Portuguese manager refused to point fingers at his players, whose effort he praised, and instead took aim at himself. “I didn’t see one player in my team not giving the maximum,” Amorim insisted. “The disappointment… It’s my fault, and I am fine with that.”
He pinpointed a lack of “game intelligence” and aggression in key moments as the reason for the defeat, acknowledging that against top teams like Pep Guardiola’s City, the small details make all the difference. “We can avoid the three goals,” he lamented. “In the end, you don’t have a good feeling.”
Despite the mounting pressure, with only eight league wins since his arrival, Amorim issued a staunch defence of his long-term project and his core beliefs. In a direct message to the club’s owners, Ineos, he drew a line in the sand.
“I will do everything I can for Man United,” he vowed in his post-match press conference. “I’m suffering more than them. But I won’t change my philosophy. If they want it changed, you change the man.”
The manager now faces a critical period to turn the tide, with United’s next Premier League test a home fixture against Chelsea at Old Trafford next Saturday.
