Under-fire manager insists he is “the man for the job” despite a dismal record and a dismal defeat, but frustrations boil over in the dressing room.
A defiant Ruben Amorim has insisted he remains the right man to lead Manchester United forward, despite seeing his team capitulate against Brentford in a 3-1 defeat that leaves his tenure hanging by a thread.
The loss, United’s second in a week, was a microcosm of their struggles under Amorim. The visitors found themselves two goals down within 20 minutes, victims of a blistering start from Brentford and a brace from forward Igor Thiago. A goal from big-money signing Benjamin Šeško offered a flicker of hope, but any chance of a comeback evaporated when captain Bruno Fernandes saw a second-half penalty saved, before a late third goal sealed a miserable afternoon for the travelling supporters.
The statistics make for grim reading for the Portuguese manager. In nearly a year at the helm, he has won just nine of his 33 Premier League games, amassing a mere 34 points from a possible 99. Yet, facing mounting pressure, Amorim stood firm in his post-match press conference.
“I’m always confident, because I know what to do. It’s my job and I’m not here just to protect the players,” Amorim stated. He pinpointed the core issue as his team’s failure to impose themselves, saying, “Today we played Brentford’s game, not our own game. And when you play the opponent’s game, it’s harder to win.”
He admitted his “biggest concern” was his team’s inability to settle, particularly after setbacks. “When the decisions are not in your favour… we need to have more personality to control the game,” he added, acknowledging the team’s fragile mentality.
The frustration was palpable within the squad, with forward Matheus Cunha summing up the mood. “Right now, to say something is really, really hard,” he confessed. “It’s very frustrating… We need to do more.”
As United prepare to host Sunderland next, the question is no longer about winning titles, but about whether Amorim can simply win enough games to keep his job.
