We Were The Better Team Today: Amorim Defiant Despite Villa Defeat

Injury-Hit Red Devils Fall to Wonder Goals as Boss Defends Performance, Vows No Transfer Panic

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was left frustrated and searching for positives after watching his team fall 2-1 to Aston Villa, defeated by two moments of individual brilliance from Morgan Rogers.

Despite the scoreline, Amorim passionately argued that his side were the better team at Villa Park. He pointed to United’s statistical edge in shots and chances, claiming they were ultimately undone by bad luck and Rogers’ exceptional finishing.

“I think everybody saw that we were the better team today, we were unlucky,” Amorim said after the match, which ended United’s four-game unbeaten run. “What matters is the result, but I think we deserved so, so much more today.”

The loss was compounded by a fresh injury worry, as captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off at halftime with a soft tissue problem. He joins a growing absentee list that includes Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and several players away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Facing a deepening crisis, Amorim was forced to hand Premier League debuts to academy graduates Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey in the second half. The manager hinted that youth may need to be his immediate solution, stating, “We are going to find solutions. No excuses.”

However, Amorim firmly dismissed the idea that the injury situation would trigger panic in the January transfer window. He emphasized a need for calm, long-term planning over rushed decisions.

“What we cannot do is reach January and try to do everything in urgency and make mistakes,” he explained. “I’m not going to say: ‘We need a lot of players.’ Because we have a plan. If we have to suffer, the club comes first.”

With his team sitting seventh at Christmas, Amorim now looks to a kinder run of fixtures against Wolverhampton, Burnley, and Leeds to steady the ship, even as he grapples with a severely depleted squad.
