Andre Onana Contemplates International Retirement Following Cameroon’s AFCON Exit

Manchester United Goalkeeper Faces Crucial Decision Amidst Reports of Strained Relations with Cameroon Chief

Andre Onana, the talented goalkeeper for Manchester United, is reportedly contemplating retiring from the Cameroon national team following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign. The decision comes in the wake of Cameroon’s elimination from the last-16 stage, marked by a 2-0 defeat against Nigeria.

Onana, who featured in only one of Cameroon’s four matches, faced challenges early in the tournament. He missed the opener against Guinea due to a missed flight, a consequence of his participation in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

Returning for the match against Senegal, Onana struggled, being held responsible for two of the goals in a 3-1 defeat. Amidst rumors of a heated dispute with Cameroon chief Samuel Eto’o, Onana was subsequently dropped for the crucial group-stage victory over Gambia, with Cameroon proceeding to the last-16 without him. The goalkeeper was once again benched in the 2-0 defeat to Nigeria.

According to reports in Cameroon, Onana is now deliberating whether to retire from international football, marking a potential repeat of his decision after the 2022 World Cup. Back then, disciplinary issues led to his withdrawal from the national team during the group stages.

This latest setback adds to Onana’s challenging season at Manchester United. The 27-year-old, who made a high-profile €51 million transfer from Inter Milan in the summer, has struggled to meet expectations. Despite a stellar Champions League season with Inter Milan, where he was lauded as the best goalkeeper in the world with the ball at his feet, Onana’s performances at Old Trafford have been marred by costly errors.

Manchester United finds themselves well off the Premier League pace, already out of European and League Cup competitions. Onana’s difficulties with the Cameroon national team only intensify the pressure he is facing at the struggling English club. The goalkeeper’s decision regarding his international career could shape his future trajectory in the sport.
