After a winless start and angry chants from fans, the under-fire boss faces a critical match against Newcastle with his future on the line.
Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou is already fighting to save his job, with reports indicating that this weekend’s clash against Newcastle United could be decisive for his future. The Australian coach, hired just 24 days ago, is under intense pressure after a miserable start at the City Ground.
The situation reached a boiling point on Thursday night following a 3-2 Europa League defeat to Danish side FC Midtjylland. The loss, which extends Postecoglou’s start to six games without a win, prompted home fans to direct chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” at the 60-year-old.
According to The Times, while Postecoglou will be in the dugout for the trip to St. James’ Park, a poor performance and result could lead the club’s hierarchy to review his position during the upcoming international break. Owner Evangelos Marinakis has a history of acting swiftly, having fired a manager in a shorter timeframe in the past.
When asked about the toxic atmosphere, Postecoglou acknowledged the fans’ frustration. “I get the mood around the place isn’t going to be great,” he stated in a press conference. “I understand people’s kind of attitude at the moment, particularly towards me, but I never worry about that.”
Despite the team sitting 17th in the Premier League and having been eliminated from the Carabao Cup by a Championship side, the former Celtic boss remains defiant. He insists the team is on the right track as he shifts them to a more attacking style.
“I really believe that we’re on the right track and when we get through this period of uncertainty we’ll be on a good path,” Postecoglou said. “If we start winning games of football, the atmosphere will change.”
After the Newcastle match, the schedule offers little respite, with games against Chelsea, a crucial Europa League tie with Porto, and a trip to in-form Bournemouth, making a turnaround all the more urgent.
