Two Killed as Heavyweight Champion’s Convoy Collides with Stationary Truck on Notorious Highway
Heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria on Monday that resulted in two fatalities, though he escaped with only minor injuries.
Joshua was traveling in a two-vehicle convoy on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when the Lexus SUV he was in collided with a stationary truck. According to eyewitness Adeniyi Orojo, who assisted at the scene, the passenger beside the driver and another individual in the car died instantly.
“The passenger beside the driver and Joshua died on the spot,” Orojo said.
Joshua, who was seated in the rear behind the driver, was seen in online video footage shirtless and visibly shaken amid the wreckage, surrounded by shattered glass. Emergency services from the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps responded, and an investigation is ongoing.
The champion was in Nigeria on a personal visit to connect with his heritage. Just hours before the tragic incident, he had posted a lighthearted Instagram story of himself playing table tennis shirtless.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria’s most dangerous highways, where stationary or broken-down vehicles without proper warning signs are a frequent hazard. Joshua’s team has not yet released an official statement, but messages of support from fans and fellow athletes have flooded social media.
The crash comes just weeks after Joshua’s high-profile return to the ring, where he stopped Jake Paul in the sixth round in Miami on December 19.
