Manchester United finally agree to the winger’s exit, with the Brazilian sealing a emotional return to Spain after a successful loan spell last season.
In a significant move on transfer deadline day, Manchester United have reached a full agreement to sell Brazilian winger Antony to La Liga side Real Betis for an initial fee of €25 million. The deal, reported by renowned journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic, brings a permanent end to the 25-year-old’s turbulent time at Old Trafford.
The transfer culminates a summer-long pursuit from the Spanish club, who were initially hoping to secure another loan for the player they know well. Antony enjoyed a revitalizing spell with Betis in the latter half of last season, becoming a fan favorite by contributing nine goals and five assists in just 26 appearances.
While a deal was agreed in principle last week, final negotiations hit a snag over the significant wage cut Antony would need to accept to make the move to Seville. However, that hurdle has now been cleared, with the club confirming that Manchester United will not be subsidizing his salary.
The final package could rise to €28 million with add-ons, and in a shrewd piece of business, the Red Devils have negotiated a 50% sell-on clause, ensuring they would benefit from any future transfer.
Antony becomes only the second player to command a transfer fee for United this summer, following Alejandro Garnacho’s departure. His exit is part of a major attacking overhaul at the club, which has also seen Marcus Rashford loaned to Barcelona, with Jadon Sancho and others also in talks to leave.
