Mikel Arteta Eyes Frankfurt Midfielder to Bolster Arsenal’s Title Hopes Amid January Transfer Window
Arsenal is preparing for a head-to-head battle with Liverpool to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson, a promising Swedish midfielder attracting significant Premier League interest ahead of the January transfer window. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, reportedly a keen admirer of Larsson, sees the 20-year-old as a potential future star who could bring fresh energy to Arsenal’s midfield for the ongoing title campaign.
According to TeamTalk, Larsson is drawing interest from multiple Premier League clubs and AC Milan. Arsenal is particularly eager to add a young, versatile midfielder, with Larsson’s skills fitting Arteta’s vision of a player who could immediately impact the squad. Known for his ball-winning capabilities, Larsson has shown flexibility on the field, capable of both defensive and box-to-box roles. This season, he has made 10 Bundesliga appearances, netting two goals for Frankfurt.
A potential complication, however, is a recent thigh injury that could influence the timing of any deal. Arsenal will likely monitor his recovery closely as January approaches.
Adding to the intrigue, Larsson shares an agent with Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres, a striker Arsenal previously prioritized for summer 2024 before cost constraints emerged. Arteta could still explore a future move for Gyökeres, though Sporting’s former coach Ruben Amorim has already ruled out any transfer in the coming January window.
Data analytics group SciSports has likened Larsson to Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo and Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, with some comparisons also made to Arsenal’s own Declan Rice. With an estimated transfer value of €21 million, Larsson offers an affordable, high-potential option, though he does not yet have Premier League experience. SciSports also flagged areas for development, noting that Larsson might require conditioning to meet the league’s physical demands, especially regarding pace and stamina.
For Arsenal, securing Larsson could provide crucial reinforcement in the title race, but they’ll need to fend off competition from Liverpool and possibly others in the crowded race for his signature.
