Goalless Draw Ends Gunners’ Winning Run as Reds’ Resilience Earns Vital Point
Arsenal’s seven-match winning streak came to a grinding halt on Thursday night as they were held to a tense 0-0 draw by Liverpool in a Premier League clash that leaves the title race wide open.
The result, the first goalless league meeting between the sides since 2015, prevents the Gunners from extending their lead at the top and offers hope to chasing rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa. For Liverpool, it extends their unbeaten run to 10 games and reinforces their top-four credentials.
“We wanted to win, but you have to respect the opponent,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. “It was a tight game with very few clear chances.”
The Gunners started brightly, with Bukayo Saka forcing an early save from Alisson. Liverpool, however, grew into the contest and were inches away from taking the lead when Conor Bradley’s audacious chip rebounded off the crossbar after a risky David Raya backpass.
The second half saw Liverpool gain momentum, with Dominik Szoboszlai orchestrating attacks and Florian Wirtz appealing for a penalty. Despite late pressure from both sides, clear-cut chances remained scarce, and Arsenal’s final opportunity fell to Gabriel, who headed wide in stoppage time.
“For us, it’s a good point here,” said Liverpool boss Arne Slot. “We showed character and discipline against the league leaders.”
The draw leaves Arsenal six points clear of Manchester City, who have two games in hand, while Liverpool remain fourth, firmly in the Champions League chase. With the title battle far from decided, this gritty stalemate ensures the drama at the top of the table will continue deep into the new year.
