Arteta Praises Team’s Response After Disappointing Week; Wolves Boss O’Neil Commends Team’s Effort Despite Defeat
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed delight as his team secured a crucial 2-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers, reclaiming the top spot in the Premier League standings. This victory comes on the heels of a challenging week for the Gunners, which saw them exit the Champions League and suffer a setback in their title chase after a loss to Aston Villa.
Speaking to the BBC after the match, Arteta commended his players for their response to adversity, saying, “It was a very good response, so proud of them. We reacted in the right way. We deserved to win the game and got another clean sheet again.”
Despite the disappointment of their Champions League exit against Bayern Munich, Arteta remained optimistic about Arsenal’s league campaign, noting, “Obviously disappointed to lose against Bayern — small margins but we have five games to go and we are top again.”
Currently leading the Premier League with 74 points, Arsenal holds a slim one-point advantage over Manchester City and three points ahead of Liverpool, although both rivals have a game in hand.
Reflecting on the match, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil praised his team’s spirited effort against a strong Arsenal side. O’Neil acknowledged the youthful composition of his squad and their resilience, stating, “It’s not often you are pleased and proud after a defeat but in our current situation to produce energy and fight like that was an incredible effort.”
The game saw Arsenal break the deadlock just before halftime, courtesy of a goal from Leandro Trossard, followed by Martin Odegaard sealing the win in stoppage time with a strike from a tight angle.
Despite the overall gritty nature of the match, the victory marks a significant rebound for Arsenal as they continue their pursuit of the Premier League title.
