Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard is reportedly considering his future at the club, with the Gunners open to a potential blockbuster sale this summer. The move would represent a seismic shift for Mikel Arteta’s side, parting ways with their on-field leader and creative heartbeat.

According to transfer reports, the 27-year-old Norwegian playmaker is exploring his options ahead of the transfer window. With two years left on his contract and no extension yet agreed, Arsenal may be compelled to cash in on their skipper to ensure compliance with the Premier League’s strict Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Since arriving permanently in 2021 and taking the armband from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ødegaard has been instrumental in Arsenal’s resurgence. However, despite starting 13 league matches this season, his place has come under renewed pressure following the arrivals of Eberechi Eze and Mikel Merino. In Arsenal’s last two Premier League games, he was substituted before the 60-minute mark—a notable shift for a player once seen as untouchable.

Valued at over €76 million, a sale would easily make Ødegaard Arsenal’s most expensive departure in history, surpassing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s 2017 move to Liverpool. While a departure in 2026 has been floated, the financial and squad dynamics could accelerate a split this summer.

The club has also prepared for this possibility, with highly-rated youngster Ethan Nwaneri gaining experience on loan at Marseille, viewed internally as a ready-made long-term successor.

For now, Ødegaard remains a key figure in Arteta’s plans, but as the summer approaches, the club faces a painful choice between financial pragmatism and retaining their captain.
