Arsenal Escape with Bizarre Win Over Wolves Thanks to Two Own Goals

Last-gasp own goal breaks Wolves’ hearts and sends Gunners five points clear in controversial fashion.

Arsenal were forced to rely on an astonishing piece of late fortune to secure a narrow and unconvincing 2-1 win over a battling Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The victory, which sent the Gunners five points clear at the top of the Premier League, came courtesy of not one, but two opposition own goals.

The match seemed destined to end in a shocking and frustrating draw after the bottom-placed Wolves, who have won just two points all season, defied expectations and equalised deep in stoppage time through substitute Tolu Arokodare.

For much of the contest, Arsenal struggled to break down Wolves’ determined defence, with goalkeeper Sam Johnstone largely untested. Their afternoon was further marred by an early hamstring injury to defender Ben White.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 70th minute, but not by an Arsenal player. Bukayo Saka’s corner struck the far post and bounced into the net off the back of the unfortunate Johnstone.

Just as Wolves manager Rob Edwards seemed set to celebrate a heroic first point, disaster struck again. In the final moments of added time, Saka’s low cross was turned into his own net by defender Yerson Mosquera, snatching the win for a relieved Arsenal.

While the three points are crucial for Arsenal’s title ambitions, the manner of the victory will raise questions. For Wolves, the cruel defeat deepens their crisis, leaving them 13 points from safety and in serious danger of finishing with the lowest points total in Premier League history.
