Gyokeres Brace from the Bench Caps Dominant Display as Gunners Go Nine Points Clear
Arsenal took a commanding nine-point lead at the Premier League summit with a straightforward 3-0 victory over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. A stunning strike from Martin Zubimendi and a late brace from substitute Viktor Gyokeres sealed a dominant, if not always frantic, performance from Mikel Arteta’s league leaders.
The Gunners controlled proceedings from the outset, patiently probing the Sunderland defence. While clear chances were initially scarce, Declan Rice set the tone just after the half-hour mark, unleashing a fierce long-range drive that whistled just past the post.
The breakthrough finally arrived just before halftime, and it was worth the wait. Leandro Trossard laid the ball off to Zubimendi on the edge of the box, and the Spanish midfielder unleashed a superb low drive that rocketed off the inside of the post and into the net, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Sunderland showed more ambition after the break but left themselves vulnerable. The introduction of Viktor Gyokeres on the hour mark proved decisive. Just six minutes after entering the fray, the Swedish striker was on hand to emphatically finish a clever poke-through from Kai Havertz, doubling Arsenal’s cushion.
Any lingering doubt was extinguished in stoppage time. The goal was crafted by the blistering pace of Gabriel Martinelli, who powered down the left, shrugged off a defender, and unselfishly squared the ball for Gyokeres to tap in his second and Arsenal’s third.
The result marks another efficient step towards the title for Arteta’s men, who now sit on 56 points. All eyes now turn to Sunday’s clash between Liverpool and Manchester City, who can only watch as the Gunners disappear further over the horizon. For a hard-working Sunderland side, the defeat leaves them in ninth place on 36 points.
