Arsenal Eye Emirates Stadium Expansion in Bid to Rival European Giants

Inspired by Real Madrid’s successful renovation, the Gunners are exploring ambitious plans to increase capacity beyond 70,000 and significantly boost matchday revenue.

Arsenal are drawing up ambitious plans for a major expansion of the Emirates Stadium, with the goal of transforming it into the largest club ground in London and unlocking new financial power. The project, reportedly inspired by Real Madrid’s £860 million renovation of the Santiago Bernabéu, could see the stadium’s capacity surge to over 70,000.

Since its opening in 2006, the 60,704-seat Emirates has been overtaken by several rival Premier League grounds. Now, club officials are actively assessing complex engineering options to make the stands steeper and add more seats, all while trying to maintain the stadium’s iconic outer bowl appearance.

The potential financial reward is a key driver. Real Madrid saw its matchday revenue double to a staggering £215 million after its renovation, a figure that would be a game-changer for Arsenal, whose matchday revenue was £131.7 million last season.

Such a major overhaul would likely force the Gunners to temporarily relocate, with Wembley Stadium emerging as a potential home for a season, mirroring the approach taken by Tottenham during the construction of their new ground.

The project has gained serious momentum with the recent appointment of Otto Maly, a real estate expert who played a central role in building the state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles for owner Stan Kroenke. His involvement signals that Arsenal’s stadium ambitions are a top priority for the club’s ownership.
