Nigerian Star’s Feud with Manager Gasperini Sparks Transfer Speculation as Premier League Clubs Circle
Arsenal are reportedly preparing to reignite their interest in Ademola Lookman after the Nigerian forward’s public falling out with Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini. The 27-year-old, who has long been on the Gunners’ radar, is now expected to leave the Serie A club this summer following a turbulent week that saw Atalanta crash out of the Champions League in humiliating fashion.
The Italian side, heavy favorites going into their Round of 16 tie against Club Brugge, suffered a shocking 5-2 aggregate defeat. The second leg, played at home, turned into a disaster as Gasperini’s all-out attacking approach backfired, allowing Brugge to exploit gaps and secure a dominant victory. The manager’s frustration boiled over after the match, with Gasperini singling out Lookman for criticism, calling him “the worst penalty taker I’ve ever seen” after the forward missed a crucial spot kick.
Lookman, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, did not take the comments lightly. In a fiery social media statement, he hit back at his manager, labeling the remarks as “disrespectful.” The public spat has further strained their relationship, with Gasperini later apologizing but also hinting at his own departure from the club.
“Lookman had an extraordinary impact,” Gasperini said ahead of Atalanta’s Serie A clash with Empoli. “Regarding everything that happened afterwards around the penalty, my comment was not meant to be offensive… If he felt offended, I didn’t want to offend him.” The 67-year-old then dropped a bombshell, revealing he would not extend his contract beyond this season, adding, “There is a beginning and an end for everything. At the end of the season, we will see if it will be the case to go out of contract or not.”
For Lookman, the writing appears to be on the wall. Reports suggest he is determined to leave Atalanta this summer after failing to secure a move last year. With his contract set to expire in 2025, the club may be forced to lower their €60 million valuation to facilitate a transfer.
According to Calciomercato, Arsenal and Liverpool are among the clubs ready to “return to the charge” for the Nigerian international. Both Premier League sides have previously shown interest in Lookman, who has impressed with his pace, creativity, and goal-scoring ability during his time in Italy.
For Arsenal, the pursuit of Lookman could signal their intent to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season. Meanwhile, Liverpool may see him as a potential addition to their forward line as they look to rebuild under new management.
