Swedish Striker Set to Join Gunners After Lengthy Negotiations With Sporting CP
After weeks of negotiations, Arsenal have reached an agreement with Sporting CP to sign Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres in a deal worth up to €80 million—making him the Portuguese club’s most expensive sale in history. The transfer is expected to be finalized on Thursday, with the 27-year-old traveling to London to complete his medical.
Breaking Down the Deal
The total package includes:
- €63.5m upfront fee
- €10m in achievable bonuses
- €6.5m in waived agent fees
Sporting had initially pushed for performance-based add-ons, including payments tied to Gyökeres’ appearances and Arsenal’s Champions League qualification. However, the final terms remain undisclosed.
Coventry City’s Windfall
Coventry City, Gyökeres’ former club, will receive €3.95m from the initial payment as part of a 10% sell-on clause for any fee above the €24m Sporting paid for him in 2023.
What’s Next for Gyökeres?
The striker is set to sign a five-year contract, keeping him at Arsenal until 2030. However, it remains uncertain whether he will join the Gunners’ ongoing pre-season tour in the Far East.
Arsenal kicked off their tour with a 1-0 win over AC Milan on Wednesday and will face Newcastle (July 27) and Tottenham (July 31). Gyökeres was recently spotted at a dental clinic in Mallorca, fueling speculation over his immediate travel plans. If the deal is wrapped up swiftly, he could still link up with Mikel Arteta’s squad before the tour concludes.
This long-awaited move finally gives Arsenal their desired No. 9, adding firepower to their Premier League title ambitions.
