Arsenal Forced to Swap Home Kit for North London Derby Due to Colour Clash

Premier League Ruling Bans Arsenal’s Traditional Red Shirt for Tottenham Showdown

Arsenal will not wear their iconic red home kit in Sunday’s highly anticipated North London Derby against Tottenham, following a ruling by the Premier League and PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited). The decision comes due to concerns that Arsenal’s home kit contains too much white on the back, creating a clash with Tottenham’s traditional white shirts.

Instead, Mikel Arteta’s team will don their black away strip for the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, deviating from the customary red that is typically worn on derby day. Despite Arsenal’s appeal to the Premier League to allow them to wear red shorts and socks alongside the home shirt, their request was rejected.

Reports have surfaced that Arsenal were made aware of the potential kit clash during the summer, but with production already underway, they opted to move forward with the design. As a result, for the first time in recent North London Derby history, one of the teams will be forced to change colours. In the reverse fixture in January, Tottenham will switch to their away kit.

Arsenal released a statement addressing the situation: “PGMOL and Premier League ruled that our 2024/25 home kit features too much white, thus clashing with Tottenham’s traditional colours, even with the option of red shorts and socks for us, which was also discussed.”

Arsenal also highlighted the success of their black away kit, which was first worn in a win over Aston Villa last month. The club noted that the design of the kit pays tribute to the strong connections Arsenal has with the African diaspora in North London and beyond.

Sunday’s clash sees Arsenal aiming for their third consecutive victory at Tottenham’s ground. Last season, the Gunners earned a 2-2 draw at the Emirates in the first meeting, followed by a 3-2 win in the return fixture after taking a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime.

However, Arsenal faces significant challenges going into the match due to a growing injury list. Declan Rice is suspended after receiving a red card against Brighton, and new signing Mikel Merino is sidelined with an injury sustained in training. Additional absentees include fellow newcomer Riccardo Calafiori and captain Martin Odegaard, who both picked up injuries during the international break.
