Arsenal Given Clear Run at Nico Williams as Barcelona Cool Their Interest

Gunners step up pursuit of Spanish star after La Liga giants shift focus – with Arteta promising “very exciting summer”

Barcelona have effectively handed Arsenal a major boost in their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams after publicly distancing themselves from the Spanish international.

The 22-year-old sensation, who scored the decisive goal in Spain’s Euro 2024 final victory over England, was heavily linked with Barcelona last summer. However, the cash-strapped Catalans ultimately opted to sign his international teammate Dani Olmo instead. Now, with Barca president Joan Laporta confirming they’re “considering other options,” the path appears clearer for Arsenal to make their move.

Williams, whose £49m release clause makes him an attractive proposition, has continued his electric form this season with 11 goals and 7 assists. But his £300,000-a-week wage demands have proven a stumbling block – one Arsenal appear better placed to handle than their Spanish rivals.

“Williams was one of the candidates last season, but we decided on Olmo,” Laporta told TV3, effectively ending speculation about their interest. Barcelona’s decision has been influenced by the outstanding form of Raphinha and teenage phenom Lamine Yamal, leaving little room in their star-studded attack.

Meanwhile in North London, Arsenal’s hierarchy have signaled their intention to spend big this summer. Co-chairman Josh Kroenke promised investment after Sunday’s crucial Newcastle win, while Mikel Arteta has teased a “very exciting summer” of recruitment.

New sporting director Andrea Berta has already begun laying the groundwork, with reports suggesting he’s held preliminary talks to gauge Williams’ interest. The Spanish flyer would add blistering pace and creativity to Arsenal’s frontline as they look to close the gap on Manchester City.

“Since day one, when we were interviewing for that role, it was very clear what this squad needs to go to the next level,” Arteta said of Berta’s appointment. “Someone with that clarity is very, very helpful.”

With Barcelona out of the running and Arsenal’s war chest open for business, the Emirates could soon be welcoming one of Europe’s most exciting young talents – provided they can meet his substantial wage demands.
