Gunners’ Title Hopes Rest on City’s Match Against Hammers
Arsenal is looking for a crucial favor from West Ham United as the Premier League season concludes. The Gunners are two points behind Manchester City, needing City to drop points against the Hammers while they host Everton.
Manchester City only needs to win their final game to secure a fourth consecutive title. However, if City fails to win and Arsenal secures three points, the Gunners would claim their first title in 20 years.
Arsenal’s title chances seemed slim when Tottenham lost 2-0 to City on Tuesday night. Unlike Spurs, West Ham might have more motivation to challenge City. Sunday’s game will be David Moyes’ last as West Ham’s manager, with Julen Lopetegui set to take over for the next season. Moyes has been with the club for a total of five seasons, leading them in 260 matches. Sunday’s match will be his 261st and final game in charge.
The parting with Moyes is amicable, with his contract expiring. West Ham players and fans would love to give him a memorable send-off with a win. Additionally, Arsenal’s Declan Rice, a former West Ham star, has had a significant impact in his first season with the Gunners. A win by West Ham could indirectly help Rice win the Premier League title with Arsenal.
Moyes might also be motivated to do a favor for his former player, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. Arteta played for Moyes at Everton for six-and-a-half years, with the final two years as captain, forming a strong bond.
In a pre-match press conference, Arteta acknowledged Moyes’ influence on his career, saying, “He’s been instrumental and so important in my career, as a footballer and a person. He could help us to fulfill our dream and my personal dream to win the Premier League.”
Arsenal fans will be watching closely, hoping West Ham can deliver a performance that opens the door for a long-awaited title victory.
