Gunners Face Uphill Battle in Champions League Clash as Injury Woes and Madrid’s European Pedigree Loom Large
Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has issued a stark warning to his old club ahead of their Champions League quarter-final showdown with Real Madrid: “You’ll need your best performance of the season to survive.”
The Gunners head into Tuesday’s first leg at the Emirates on the back of a frustrating 1-1 Premier League draw with Everton—a result compounded by the devastating loss of defender Gabriel Magalhaes to a season-ending hamstring injury. Real Madrid, too, stumbled over the weekend, suffering a shock 2-1 home defeat to Valencia. But Petit fears the Spanish giants’ legendary Champions League aura could prove decisive.
“It’s Real Madrid in the Champions League. Every time they hear that anthem, something clicks,” the French World Cup winner told Metro. “I’ve seen them win games they had no business winning. Arsenal must be perfect—defensively solid, clinically ruthless—because Madrid’s strikers only need half a chance to end you.”

The return of Bukayo Saka from injury offers a glimmer of hope. The 23-year-old star, who scored the winner against Fulham in his comeback appearance, could exploit Real’s defensive vulnerabilities—particularly at left-back. “If he’s fit to start, he’ll hurt them,” said Petit. “But Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice must also rise to the occasion. This is their moment to lead.”
With Madrid chasing a record 16th European crown and Arsenal desperate to prove they belong among the elite, Tuesday’s clash promises high drama. As Petit put it: “The margin for error? Zero.”
