Arsenal Prepare Formal Bid for Sporting Star Gyokeres After Agent Talks

Gunners Step Up Striker Search as Swede Emerges as Key Target Amid Sesko Decision

Arsenal are ready to make their move for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres after fresh talks with his agent this week, as Mikel Arteta looks to finally land a top-class No. 9 this summer.

Portuguese outlets CNN Portugal and Record report that the Gunners held a formal meeting with the Swedish hitman’s representative, Hasan Cetinkaya, on Wednesday—a clear sign that an official bid could be imminent. While RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško remains Arsenal’s preferred option due to his age and adaptability, Gyokeres has emerged as a serious fallback plan if a deal for the Slovenian falls through.

The 27-year-old has made his desire to join Arsenal clear, despite interest from Manchester United, who have reportedly been in daily contact with his camp. However, negotiations with Sporting won’t be straightforward. The Portuguese club’s president, Frederico Varandas, has publicly denied the existence of a €70 million “gentleman’s agreement” for Gyokeres’ exit, though they may still sell for less than his €100 million release clause.

Tensions between Gyokeres’ camp and Sporting have escalated in recent weeks, with Cetinkaya pushing for a transfer after a reported falling-out. Arsenal, who avoided the chaos of the Club World Cup’s rushed transfer window, have taken their time assessing their options—with Gyokeres now firmly in their sights.

Should the Gunners formalize their interest, it could spark a bidding war with United, but Arteta’s side currently hold the advantage, with the player himself favoring a move to North London. After a quiet January window, Arsenal’s summer business is heating up—and a new marquee striker could soon be on the way.
