Former Palmeiras striker remains committed to Arsenal despite Brazilian club’s interest
Palmeiras President Leila Pereira recently disclosed that Arsenal turned down the Brazilian club’s attempt to re-sign Gabriel Jesus. Jesus, who began his professional career with Palmeiras in 2015, made the leap to Europe with Manchester City in 2017 and later joined Arsenal in 2022. His arrival at the Emirates initially sparked a shift in Arsenal’s fortunes, as he bolstered Mikel Arteta’s squad in their pursuit of the Premier League title last season.
However, Jesus’s form has dipped this season due to recurring injuries. A groin injury sidelined the forward after a promising pre-season, and while Arteta expressed confidence in Jesus’s recovery, the striker has yet to regain his previous momentum. He has only made one Premier League start and hasn’t scored since January.
Palmeiras recently made an ambitious attempt to bring Jesus back to Brazil. Pereira told ESPN, “We reached out to Arsenal, but they firmly stated, ‘Leila, there are no conditions whatsoever. We will not negotiate the player.’ The subject is closed.”
Despite Arsenal’s insistence on retaining Jesus, the 26-year-old will look to regain form as he is expected to start in the Carabao Cup clash against Preston on Wednesday. Arteta remains optimistic, commenting earlier this month, “He came on in great shape, probably in the best condition he’s been with us. He was flying in pre-season before the injury impacted him.”
For now, Jesus remains an integral part of Arsenal’s plans as both club and player work towards his full recovery.
