Midfielder Nears €60m Move as Gunners Look to Revamp Struggling Squad
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal are on the verge of completing their first major signing of the summer, with Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi agreeing to join the club ahead of the 2025/26 season.
After two disappointing transfer windows and another trophyless campaign, pressure is mounting on Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal hierarchy to deliver in the market. The Gunners fell short in the Premier League title race for the third year in a row and suffered an early Champions League exit, leaving fans desperate for reinforcements.
Zubimendi, a long-term target for Arsenal, appears to be the first piece of their summer rebuild. The Spanish midfielder was close to joining Liverpool last year before opting to stay at Real Sociedad for another season. Now, Arsenal have moved quickly to secure his signature, with Romano announcing a verbal agreement is in place.
“Arsenal agree deal to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad—here we go!” Romano posted on X. “Zubimendi has now verbally agreed to a long-term deal… formal steps must follow soon to trigger his €60m release clause. He’s set to become the first signing of the new season.”
However, some caution remains. Journalist Ben Jacobs noted that while an agreement is in place, Arsenal are wary after Zubimendi’s last-minute change of heart in 2024. Still, with sporting director Andrea Berta leading the new era at the Emirates, the club is pushing to finalize the deal swiftly.
The 25-year-old midfielder is expected to bolster Arsenal’s spine, but the Gunners are also eyeing a striker and a left winger as they look to turn their fortunes around after a frustrating season.
