Gunners Eye Affordable Options as Newcastle’s Form Dashes Hopes for Isak Deal
Arsenal’s summer striker hunt is taking a new turn, with Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres now leading the shortlist as Alexander Isak becomes an increasingly unlikely signing.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal had initially hoped Newcastle United’s potential failure to secure Champions League football might make Isak available. However, with Eddie Howe’s side sitting third—and even able to overtake the Gunners with a win at the Emirates this weekend—any chance of landing Mikel Arteta’s first-choice striker appears to have faded.
Instead, Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres has emerged as a more realistic and affordable option. Arsenal’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, is a known admirer of the 26-year-old Swedish international and has already explored a potential deal.
Beyond Gyokeres, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško remains a strong candidate. The 21-year-old has been on Arsenal’s radar for years, and Leipzig’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League could push him toward an exit.
Other names in the mix include Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, a player Arteta admires—though concerns linger over his £40m+ price tag given he turns 30 in December. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike and Brighton’s versatile forward João Pedro have also been discussed as potential alternatives.
With the summer window approaching, Arsenal’s search for a new No. 9 is heating up—and Gyokeres could be the man to lead their attack next season.
