Referees to Announce VAR Decisions to Fans in Groundbreaking Pilot Program
Arsenal will host Newcastle United on Tuesday in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, marking the introduction of a pioneering VAR system aimed at increasing transparency for fans. The new system will see referees announce VAR decisions over the stadium’s PA system, providing clarity on key moments of the game.
The initiative, implemented by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and the English Football League (EFL), will be trialed across both legs of the Arsenal-Newcastle tie as well as the Tottenham-Liverpool semi-final. Arsenal released a statement explaining the pilot, emphasizing its potential to enhance the match-day experience for supporters.
“The two matches against the Magpies will see the use of the video assistant referee for the first time during our run in this season’s competition,” Arsenal stated. “However, there will be a twist, as the EFL are trialing a new system where officials explain their decisions over the stadium’s PA system.”
Referees will provide brief announcements of final decisions, such as the outcome of offside or handball reviews, but will not share full discussions between on-field officials and VAR.
The EFL echoed Arsenal’s sentiments in its own statement: “In-stadium VAR announcements have already been successfully introduced in several FIFA events, including the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This pilot aims to provide greater clarity and understanding around key decisions to supporters.”
PGMOL chief Howard Webb has been an advocate for transparency and technological improvements since VAR’s introduction in 2019. Despite controversies surrounding its use, Webb sees the announcement system as a step toward improving the fan experience and increasing trust in decision-making.
Arsenal and Newcastle’s semi-final fixtures—set for January 7 at the Emirates Stadium and February 5 at St. James’ Park—come during a hectic period for the Gunners, who are juggling Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup commitments.
Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as this innovative VAR feature makes its English football debut, potentially setting a new standard for officiating transparency.
