Youngster’s suspension lifted as FA panel rules in Arsenal’s favor
Arsenal’s appeal against Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card in their 1-0 victory over Wolves has been successful, with an independent FA panel ruling in favor of the club and lifting the player’s three-match suspension.
Lewis-Skelly was sent off in the first half for a challenge on Wolves defender Matt Doherty, with referee Michael Oliver deeming it serious foul play. The decision was reviewed by VAR official Darren England, who upheld the red card after multiple replays.
However, Arsenal swiftly appealed before the Tuesday deadline, and the FA panel has now concluded that the dismissal was wrongful, clearing the 18-year-old midfielder to play in the Gunners’ upcoming domestic matches.
FA Confirms Decision
An official FA statement confirmed the ruling:
“An Independent Regulatory Commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to Myles Lewis-Skelly and removed his three-match suspension. The Arsenal player was sent off for serious foul play during their Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, January 25th.”
Referee Faces Backlash
While Arsenal celebrates the decision, the match’s officiating has sparked significant controversy. The PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) revealed that referee Michael Oliver has faced abuse and even death threats following the fixture. Reports indicate that police officers were sent to his home on Sunday as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of Oliver and his family.
Arteta and Pundits Condemn Decision
The initial red card decision was widely criticized by football analysts, former players, and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. Speaking after the match, Arteta didn’t hold back his frustration:
“I am absolutely fuming because it is that obvious. I don’t think my words are going to help. It’s so clear that I will leave it to you, and hopefully, the right thing will happen after today.”
Now, with the FA panel ruling in Arsenal’s favor, Lewis-Skelly is free to feature in the club’s upcoming fixtures—a major relief for the team as they continue their fight for Premier League success.
