Teen Sensation Out for Weeks After Bright Start to Senior Career
Arsenal has suffered another injury setback as promising 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri faces several weeks on the sidelines with a muscle injury. Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the news ahead of the Gunners’ Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle on Tuesday.
Nwaneri, who was filling in for injured star Bukayo Saka, impressed by scoring in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brighton before being forced off at halftime. Arteta shared the details of the injury, revealing that the young midfielder felt discomfort during the match.
“Unfortunately, he has picked up an injury and is going to be out for a few weeks. It’s a muscular injury,” Arteta said. “He said, ‘I am feeling something, I don’t know what it is.’”
Arteta praised Nwaneri for his contributions to the team, highlighting the teenager’s impact in his recent appearances.
“He has earned the right to step up and play for us. He has started some big games and impacted them, even playing in different positions,” Arteta said. “I am gutted for him because this will interrupt his momentum, but it’s part of the development process. I’ve been really happy with his progress.”
In addition to Nwaneri’s absence, Arsenal is monitoring the fitness of Kai Havertz, who has been recovering from an illness. Arteta expressed cautious optimism about Havertz’s availability for the Newcastle match.
“I hope so, but I don’t want to say yes because last time I said I think he was going to be fit, and then he wasn’t,” Arteta said.
The injury blow to Nwaneri adds to Arsenal’s challenges as they navigate a busy schedule, but the young talent’s recent performances suggest he’ll have a bright future once he recovers.
