Despite the English deadline passing, the Gunners’ work isn’t done as Turkish interest and an injury crisis keep the pressure on.
With the summer transfer window finally closed in England, Arsenal can breathe a tentative sigh of relief and focus on the pitch. The North London club was one of the busiest in the Premier League, embarking on a major squad overhaul under Mikel Arteta that went right down to the wire.
The flurry of activity concluded with the signing of defender Piero Hincapie on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen, a deal the club expects to become permanent next summer. However, any hopes for a quiet international break have been dashed. With transfer windows still open elsewhere, offers for key players are still arriving, and a growing injury list demands constant attention.
Turkish Interest in Trossard
Despite the English deadline passing, clubs in Turkey can still conduct business, and it appears Besiktas have set their sights on Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard. According to reports from the Mirror and Turkish outlet Sozcu, negotiations are already underway between the clubs.
Besiktas is said to have tabled an opening offer of €22m (£19m) for the 30-year-old Belgian winger. Arsenal is expected to respond soon. The interest comes despite Trossard having just signed a new contract this summer, though he has seen limited playing time in the early stages of the season.
Martinelli Stays Put After Clubs Fail to Meet Asking Price
Another player who faced speculation was Brazilian forward Gabriel Martinelli. Reports suggest Arsenal were open to a sale if their valuation was met, with the club hoping to receive around £60m for the 24-year-old.
However, while several clubs were reportedly interested, none were willing to push their bids beyond £40m, resulting in Martinelli staying with the Gunners. His current contract runs until 2027. He has made two appearances so far this season but is yet to get on the scoresheet.
His performance in the recent loss to Liverpool even drew criticism from former Arsenal star Theo Walcott. Speaking on the It’s Called Soccer podcast, Walcott suggested Martinelli overthought his game, stating, “If you overthink things as a winger, you mess up,” and lamenting that the Brazilian failed to test Liverpool’s makeshift defender.
For now, Arteta’s squad is set, but the management’s focus is split between integrating new signings like Hincapie and navigating the twin challenges of external transfer interest and internal fitness concerns.
