Arteta Hails ‘Incredible’ Merino After Masterful Derby Display

‘Defensive Nine’ shines with assist and dominant performance as Arsenal thrash rivals Tottenham.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta lavished praise on Mikel Merino, calling the Spaniard “incredible” after he delivered a tactical masterclass in an unfamiliar role during the Gunners’ emphatic 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The North London derby was ignited by a moment of magic from Merino, who broke the deadlock with a sublime lobbed pass that sent Leandro Trossard through to score. While Arsenal controlled much of the game, a stunning long-range strike from Richarlison gave Spurs hope, before Eberechi Eze sealed the win by completing his hat-trick.

The spotlight, however, remained firmly on Merino, who once again excelled while playing out of position as a central striker. When asked about the midfielder’s performance leading the line, Arteta was effusive.

“Yes, I think he was incredible again,” Arteta said. “We are asking him to feel and play as a number nine, and he’s not a natural one, but he’s such an intelligent player. His work ethic and his desire to contribute and make others better is that big.”

Arteta even coined a new term to describe Merino’s unique role, dubbing him a “defensive nine.” The label fit perfectly with a performance that saw Merino win all five of his tackles and ten duels, while also dropping into midfield to help Arsenal regain control.

The victory sends Arsenal six points clear at the top of the Premier League, but attention now turns to a massive Champions League clash against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. With the team in fine form, Merino looks set to continue as the focal point of the attack.

“Those performances give you all the right reason to continue to trust him,” Arteta stated, making it clear that the man he calls “incredible” has once again answered his critics where it matters most—on the pitch.
