Arsenal’s captain faces a race against time to be fit for the trip to Athletic Club after suffering a shoulder injury in the win over Nottingham Forest.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that captain Martin Odegaard will “do everything he can” to be ready for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Athletic Club, after the playmaker suffered a fresh injury scare in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.
The Norwegian star was forced off the pitch in the first half following an awkward fall on his shoulder after a collision with Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White. Despite trying to continue, the 26-year-old was visibly in too much discomfort and was substituted in the 18th minute.
Speaking after the match, a concerned Arteta confirmed it was likely the same shoulder problem that has troubled Odegaard before. “It is a shame because he played with his national team and was feeling good,” Arteta told reporters. “He is going to do everything to be ready for Tuesday, I guarantee you that. But I don’t know [if he will be ready].”
This latest setback continues a frustrating pattern for the Arsenal skipper, who has been hampered by injuries since the start of the 2025/26 campaign. He was also substituted in the season opener against Leeds United and missed the subsequent match against Liverpool, echoing a previous spell on the sidelines last season.
The injury cast a slight shadow over an otherwise dominant performance from the Gunners. Goals from Martin Zubimendi, who scored a brace, and new signing Viktor Gyokeres secured a comfortable win that sent Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table.
All eyes will now be on Odegaard’s recovery as Arsenal prepares for a demanding week, kicking off their European campaign in Bilbao before a mammoth Premier League showdown with Manchester City next weekend.
