Last-Gasp Martinelli Strike Salvages Point in Tense Encounter
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he was “very disappointed” to only secure a draw against Manchester City, asserting that his team completely “dominated” the match against the eight-time champions.
The Gunners controlled the game at the Emirates Stadium, restricting City to a record-low 32.8% possession for a Pep Guardiola team. However, they were on course for a defeat after Erling Haaland’s ninth-minute opener until substitute Gabriel Martinelli scored a superb stoppage-time equalizer.
The result leaves Arsenal five points behind league leaders Liverpool, while Manchester City sit ninth in the table.
“I am very proud of the team…the way we played, we dominated them, and I am very disappointed with the result,” Arteta told Sky Sports. He called City’s early goal “so unfair” but praised his players for resetting and controlling the game thereafter.
Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola cited fatigue as a critical factor for his team’s passive performance. This was City’s first away game of the month after a demanding schedule of home matches.
“We were incredibly tired,” Guardiola stated. “We have a lot of fatigue with many players. We also have a lot of injuries.”
