Injury-Hit Gunners Hold Firm to Keep Pressure on Manchester City
Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Tottenham on Sunday, keeping pace with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. A second-half header from Gabriel Magalhães proved decisive as Mikel Arteta’s side held firm despite injuries and limited chances for Spurs.
Reflecting on the win, Arteta said, “Super happy obviously. We know what it means to our club and our people to win a North London Derby. We have the power to make them very happy, and hopefully, we achieved that.”
Despite challenges due to injuries, Arsenal adapted to claim the victory. With key players like Martin Ødegaard, Riccardo Calafiori, and Oleksandr Zinchenko out, and Declan Rice suspended, Arteta revealed that he had to scrap his initial game plan just days before the match. “I had a super clear plan for four or five days, then we lost players, and I had to completely change it,” Arteta explained.
Defensively solid, Arsenal allowed Spurs to dominate possession but stifled their attack with a compact 4-4-2 shape. Arteta was seen passionately giving orders, including instructing Bukayo Saka to tighten the team’s formation, contributing to Tottenham’s inability to break through.
The victory leaves Arsenal just two points behind Manchester City, who they face next at Etihad Stadium in a highly anticipated clash between the league’s top two teams.
