Afrobeats Sensation Makes Hollywood Debut as Nollywood Legend Joins Epic Fantasy Project
Afrobeats superstar Ayra Starr and veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo are set to make their mark in Hollywood as part of the highly anticipated film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel, Children of Blood and Bone. The announcement has sent waves of excitement through fans of the book and Nigerian entertainment alike, as two of the country’s biggest talents step onto the global stage.
For Ayra Starr, this marks her Hollywood debut, coming hot on the heels of her first Nollywood film appearance. The 21-year-old singer, known for hits like Rush and Sability, continues to expand her creative horizons, proving her versatility as an artist. Meanwhile, Richard Mofe-Damijo, a beloved figure in Nollywood, brings decades of acting experience to the project, further bridging the gap between Nigerian and international cinema.
The duo joins an already impressive cast led by South African actress Thuso Mbedu, who will play Zélie, the courageous young woman at the heart of the story. Tosin Cole takes on the role of her brother Tzain, while Amandla Stenberg and Damson Idris portray Princess Amari and Prince Inan, respectively. The film also features heavyweight talents like Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran, Regina King as Queen Nehanda, and a star-studded supporting cast including Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo, and Lashana Lynch.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and produced by Lucasfilm, the studio behind Star Wars, Children of Blood and Bone is set to bring Adeyemi’s richly imagined world to life. The story is set in the mythical kingdom of Orïsha, where magic has been brutally suppressed by King Saran. When Zélie discovers a way to restore magic, she teams up with her brother and a rebellious princess to fight for justice, facing fierce opposition from the king’s son, Prince Inan.
The film, scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, is based on Adeyemi’s 2018 debut novel, which earned her a seven-figure book-and-movie deal. Often compared to J.K. Rowling, Adeyemi has crafted a powerful narrative inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, weaving themes of oppression, resistance, and hope into a fantasy world that resonates deeply with readers.
As anticipation builds for this cinematic adaptation, the inclusion of Ayra Starr and Richard Mofe-Damijo highlights the growing influence of Nigerian talent on the global stage. With its blend of African-inspired storytelling and Hollywood star power, Children of Blood and Bone promises to be a landmark film for audiences worldwide.
