The Nigerian star leads Spotify’s female artist rankings, while Nigerian musicians completely dominate the charts in Latin America.
In a major nod to her meteoric rise, Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has been declared the biggest female artist on the global streaming platform Spotify. The announcement came as part of Spotify’s newly released list of the ‘Top 5 Female Afrobeats Artists’ over the past year, with the platform praising Starr as nothing less than “the pop star of Afrobeats.”

The list showcases the powerful women shaping the genre. Securing the number two spot is Grammy-winning compatriot Tems, followed by American-Cameroonian artist Libianca at number three. Malian-French star Aya Nakamura landed in fourth place, with British-Nigerian singer Darkoo rounding out the top five.
The rankings, however, were not without a surprise. Notably absent was South Africa’s Tyla, who has swept major Afrobeats awards in the last year, leaving some fans questioning her omission.
In a further demonstration of Nigerian artists’ global reach, Spotify also revealed the top Afrobeats acts in Latin America—and the list was a clean sweep. Leading the pack is hitmaker Rema, with the newly crowned Ayra Starr taking the second spot and CKay completing the top three. Afrobeats giants Burna Boy and Wizkid followed at number four and five, respectively, proving the undeniable worldwide appeal of Nigeria’s sound.
