Barcelona Eye Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams Amid Arsenal Interest

Young Spanish Winger Shines at Euro 2024

Barcelona is reportedly very interested in signing Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who has also been linked with a move to Arsenal. Williams has been in excellent form, impressing many with his performances at Euro 2024 following a stellar season with Bilbao.

The 21-year-old winger has excelled on the left wing for Spain, forming a strong attacking trio with Alvaro Morata and 16-year-old Lamine Yamal. Spain has been one of the standout teams at the European Championship, with Williams playing a key role.

Barcelona is keen to bring Williams to Camp Nou but faces financial hurdles. Williams is said to be open to the move, but his high wage demands, reportedly around £200,000 a week, have been a stumbling block for potential suitors, including Barcelona, who are struggling with financial constraints.

In his CaughtOffside column, Ben Jacobs noted that while Williams is eager to join Barcelona, the club is hesitant due to the player’s high price tag. Similarly, Arsenal expert Charles Watts has expressed concerns about the Gunners breaking their wage structure to accommodate Williams. Watts emphasized that making the young and relatively inexperienced winger one of Arsenal’s highest earners could cause unrest within the squad.

Nico Williams

Barcelona’s interest in Williams has been widely discussed in Catalonia, especially after his impressive performances for Spain this summer. However, his €60 million release clause poses a significant challenge, making a deal seem unlikely at this stage. This could be good news for Arsenal, who remain interested in the talented winger.

In addition to Williams, Barcelona is also targeting Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino as new manager Hansi Flick prioritizes signing a defensive midfielder. Reports suggest that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been in contact with Merino, trying to persuade him to move to the Emirates this summer.
